Known for his sweet tone and soulful trombone, Andrae Murchison is one of the most versatile and talented trombonist of his generation. AM holds on to his soulful roots in Savannah, Georgia., where he grew up surrounded by traditional gospel music at home and in church at the United House of Prayer for all people. The power of the music touched his soul and was the beginning to his musical journey as a trombonist, composer, and arranger.
AM first experienced playing jazz while performing with the Savannah High School Blue Light Jazz Band and sitting in with the local jazz all-stars like Teddy Adams, Doug Carn, and Delbert Felix. As AM became seriously interested in the art form known as Jazz, he took the initiative to study under the finest musicians and institutions in the business. His primary trombone mentors are Teddy Adams, Curtis Fuller, Slide Hampton, Robin Eubanks, and Steve Turre.
In 2000 Andrae received a scholarship to attend the prestigious Oberlin Conservatory of Music where he received a Bachelors degree in Jazz Studies. Thereafter, he attended Queens College Aaron Copeland School of Music and received a Master degree in Arts.
After his studies on campus, Andrae decided to reside in New York City and attend "the university of streets". He immediately began playing/touring the world with Roy Hargrove, The Duke Ellington Orchestra, The Count Basie Orchestra, Abdullah Ibrahim, Gregory Porter, and The Skatalites to name a few.
Andrae continues to tour Europe, South Africa, South America, Asia, USA, and the Caribbean. He has performed at The Montreuax Jazz Festival, Joy of Jazz Festival, WOMAD, Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, Jamaica Jazz Festival, Tokyo Jazz Festival, and many more.
