Artist's Biography
Saxophonist, composer and arranger, TIM GREEN, is a rising star on the International music scene. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Tim was inspired to pursue music by a family of musicians at the young age of 10. While attending high school at the Baltimore School for the Arts, he was selected to be one of the 25 members (out of 500 auditioners) of the Grammy High School All-Star band that performed at the Grammy Award ceremony in Los Angeles, California. Green then received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 2004, where he studied with world-renowned instructors such as Dick Oatts, Gary Dial, Bob Mintzer and Steve Slagle. During that period, he honed his skills performing at jazz clubs around New York and around the country. In the summer of 2003 he was invited to be a part of the Jazz Aspen Snowmass summer program, where he studied with Christian McBride, Lewis Nash, Benny Green, Wallace Roney and Russell Malone. In May 2007, Green graduated from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz at the University of Southern California with a masters degree in Jazz Studies. While attending the Institute, Green studied, performed and toured nationally and internationally with jazz greats such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Terence Blanchard.
Since then, Green has had the opportunity to perform with various artists such as Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller, Jon Faddis, Christian McBride, Carl Allen, Rodney Whitaker, Hubert Laws, Kenny Burrell, Joe Chambers and the Moving Picture Orchestra, Patrice Rushen, Gary Thomas, Sean Jones , Jeremy Pelt , Warren Wolf , Larry Willis , Cyrus Chestnut , Rodney Green , Greg Hutchinson , Peter Martin , Queen Latifah , Mo Horns, Dontae Winslow, Gary Bartz and Wynton Marsalis. Green is also a member of the Soulful Symphony, conducted by Darin Atwater, which recently received a residency at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore Maryland.
After having the opportunity to play and/or record with world- renowned gospel artists like Israel Houghton, Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin , Donnie McCurkin , Yolanda Adams , Mary Mary, Men Of Standard, Joe Pace and Youthful Praise gospel music has grown to be one of Tims strongest influences. In August of 2005, Green released his debut album entitled Divine Inspiration on G Major Records, which features hymns and spiritual songs. He has performed on the nationally televised Stella Gospel Music Awards, BETs hit gospel competition show Sunday Best and has been working with his own band that features all original music with the jazz and gospel sound.
Another highlight for Green was finishing as one of the three finalists for the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition in 2008. He ultimately finished second in the final voting, but due to his fast-rising reputation in the music community long before the c ompetition, he was already considered first in the eyes of many.
Always giving back to younger musicians and to his community, Green currently serves as the saxophone professor at Morgan State University and also teaches at his former high school, the Baltimore School For The Arts.
Fire, brimstone, and a deep spiritual connection with his listeners is what best describes Greens style. It is apparent that Tim Greens fire will burn brightly for a long time.
