Artist's Biography
Paul's love of music began in the second grade playing an old, metal Conn Clarinet. His clarinet skills were developed through school lessons and band. The instrument of choice, however, was always a saxophone.
At age 12, his Dad, a small combo pianist, brought home a tenor sax two days before New Year's Eve. As he handed the sax to Paul (along with a pile of music), he said, "Learn the tenor! You're playing New Year's Eve!" It seemed his regular tenor man was sick! The gig was great and a life-long love of the sax was born. A year later, Paul played rock tenor on a top 40 rock hit!
During high school and college, Paul played back-up for many of the period's top rock and rhythm and blues stars in the greater New York metro area.
While enrolled at Quincy College in Illinois, Paul studied with Bob Koper, former lead bassoonist with the United States Marine Band. Among the students in the Quincy music program at that time, was James Pankow, famed Chicago trombonist. At this time, Paul went from playing tenor to alto and soprano. He also switched from a Mark VI Tenor to Mark VI Alto and Mark VI soprano.
He continued to play with rock and roll groups, R & B, and small jazz groups all over the Midwest. When Paul left Quincy College, he did some extensive touring and completed college at Berklee in Boston, Massachusetts. He studied sax with the great teacher/artist, Joe Viola, and played the flute during that time as well.
The intervening years have been a whirlwind of concerts, recording sessions, clinics, keeping small groups working, and teaching. Paul has also composed music for several television projects throughout the years, a ballet, as well as for his own musical group. Throughout this time, he has played everything from rock, fusion and blues, to be bop! What alto player doesn't?
Paul's personal mantra is, "A day without practicing is like a day without breathing."
He currently plays on a Mark VII Alto, Super Action 80 Model II Alto, Mark VI Soprano and Emerson Boston Legacy Flute.
