Artist's Biography
Lori Ardovino is Professor of Clarinet and Saxophone at the University of Montevallo. She is clarinetist with the Magnolia Trio and is a founding member and alto saxophonist with the Cahaba Saxophone Quartet. Dr. Ardovino is an active performer in the Birmingham area and is called upon to play clarinet, bass clarinet and saxophone with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, bass clarinet with the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra and tenor saxophone with the Joe Giattina Big Band. She is also called upon to double for the Birmingham Broadway series and with various groups such as the Magic City Actors Theater and the Red Mountain Theater Company. She is an active clinician, adjudicator, and has had numerous articles published in the Ala Breve, official journal of the Alabama Music Educators, and writes CD reviews for the Clarinet, official journal of the International Clarinet Association.
Dr. Ardovino has been a guest recitalist at a number of colleges and universities including the University of Oklahoma and has been invited to perform at the International ClarinetFest. Locally, Dr. Ardovino has performed as a soloist with the Red Mountain Chamber Orchestra, the Pelham High School band and the University of Montevallo Wind Ensemble. Additionally, she is an active composer and has had her works performed across the United States and Canada. She is an advocate for new music and is currently a composer/performer member of the Birmingham Art Music Alliance, and is part of the BAMA Outreach Players. As part of this organization, she has premiered numerous works on both clarinet and saxophone and plans on recording a CD of new clarinet and saxophone works by Alabama composers in 2009, featuring several of her own works. These will include Eloquence for solo saxophone, Diversions for solo clarinet and Variations on themes by Black Sabbath for solo bass clarinet and distortion pedals which was premiered at the 2009 University of Oklahoma Clarinet symposium. She was recently chosen to receive the 2010 Alabama Music Teachers Association Composition Commission, which will be premiered in June of 2010 at the Alabama Music Teachers Conference at the University of Montevallo. She is a member of many professional organizations such as the Music Teachers National Association, Birmingham Music Teachers Association, Alabama Music Educators Association, Alabama Bandmasters Association, International Clarinet Association, and National Association of Wind and Percussion Instructors
Dr. Ardovino received the Doctorate of Music degree in clarinet performance from the Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, where she studied and was Graduate Assistant to Ronald de Kant. She studied with the renowned Elsa Ludwig Verdehr at Michigan State University where she received the Masters degree in Clarinet Performance/Woodwind Specialists, and holds degrees in Music Education and Clarinet Performance from Moorhead State University, where she studied with Keith Lemmons and Arthur Nix. Her saxophone study has been with Rick Van Matre, CCM, James Forger and Rhonda Buckley, MSU and Keith Lemmons, MSUM. Her composition teachers include Frank Bianchi, CCM, Jere Hutchinson, Charles H. Ruggiero, MUS, and Henry Gwiazda, MSU. Dr. Ardovino performs on a the Leblanc Symphonie Bb and A clarinets with the Backun O+ mouthpiece, Selmer Mark VII alto saxophone and Selmer Series II tenor saxophones using the Selmer C* S80 series mouthpieces.
