Dr. Timothy Meyer Altman is chair of the music department at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. He is the Director of Bands, teaches trumpet, conducting, and instrumental music education courses. He has taught instrumental and general music at the elementary, middle school, high school, and university level in Virginia, Wisconsin, Kentucky, and North Carolina.
Altman completed his Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in trumpet performance at the University of Kentucky. Terry Everson, Frank Hanson, and Allen Bachelder are his principal trumpet teachers. He also holds degrees from Virginia Tech (BA, Music Education), and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (MME, Music Education). Tim’s father, Edward Altman, was a trumpet player in the Richmond symphony (VA), a band director, and continues to be a huge influence on his life.
Dr. Altman is an active conductor, clinician, adjudicator, and trumpet performer. He has performed at international conferences (Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, International Trumpet Guild, etc.) and led the UNCP Trumpet Ensemble to perform at the ITG conference in 2012 and 2014. He performed at the Royal College of Music (London) in 2005, Amman, Jordan in 2008 and 2012 and throughout Italy in 2013. His latest CD “Baroque Music for Two Trumpets, Strings, and Harpsichord” was released in summer 2014. He is presently the principal trumpet for the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and the Carolina Philharmonic. He has also performed with The Four Tops, The Temptations, Doc Severinsen, Allen Vizzutti, Vince DiMartino, Bruce Hornsby, Al Jarreau, David Sanborn, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, and many more international artists. Dr. Altman is a Bach performing artist (Conn-Selmer).
