Dai Zhonghui, the well-known trumpet player, conductor and international competition judge, is now the vice president of ASBE (Association for Symphonic Band and Ensemble) of Chinese Musicians’ Association, a member of board of directors of International Trumpet Guild, the President of China Trumpet Guild, professor of China Central Conservatory of Music, professor of Philadelphia Brass Ensemble expert class, professor of Grand Valley State University expert class. Principal trumpet of China National Symphony Orchestra from 1996 to 2006.
Mr. Dai went to US study trumpet performing in 1986, and won the Provost Scholarship of USC School of Music in 1989, during the time at USC, he studied trumpet performing with professor Rob Roy McGregor and Boyde Hood.In 1990, Dai was named principal trumpet at USC Symphony Orchestra, and performed at JFK Center for Performing Arts with the orchestra.Later, he continued studying with Charles Schlueter, then principal trumpet at BSO, and Roger Voisin.
Recommended by Douglas Lowry – then Principal at USC School of Music, and conductor Daniel Lewis, Mr. Dai entered into “Artist Diploma” masterclass in 1993, made him the first time ever wind player in the masterclass, and awarded as Excellent Artist.It’s never ending pursuing his trumpet performance, Mr. Dai continued studying with the world famous trumpet player Thomas Stevens.
Mr. Dai was the principal trumpet at Santa Monica Symphony Orchestra and Guild Opera House Orchestra in 1993, principal trumpet at Riverside Symphony Orchestra and Ventura Symphony Orchestra in 1994.He also performed at LA Musical Festival, Grand Teton Musical Festival and the most beloved Tanglewood Musical Festival.He was invited as principal trumpet at the 2nd International Musical Festival in Pittsburg.In Mar 2001, he performed Andre Jolivet trumpet concertino with San Bernadino Symphony Orchestra, in April he performed at Redlands Symphony Orchestra on Brandenburg Concerto No. 2.In Nov 2011, he had a concert tour in France.With the numerous music events, Dai was well recognized in the musicians’ world, he received multiple interviews from musical media, including the famous PIPERS journal.
In most recent years, Mr. Dai has been a worldwide frequent traveler, he was invited to USC, Eastman School of Music, University of South Florida, Michigan State University, University of Kansas, Southern Illinois University, Thailand National University, National Taiwan University of Arts, and Conservatory De Lyon to conduct masterclasses and hold solo concerts.
After returning to China, Mr. Dai was the trumpet professor at China Central Conservatory of Music, he has been very active in China trumpet world, and was invited to conduct masterclasses and solo concerts by many conservatories and music schools in Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Xi’an, Shenyang, Tianjin, Beijing and Guiyang etc.He also published several dissertations in the influential musical magazines including “Brass Bulletin” and recorded multiple albums.His solo performances were aired in the dominating media - CCTV (China Central Television) many times.
As the special guest expert in ITG 2005, he was teaching masterclass and appointed as judge of International Competitions.The solo concert at ITG 2006 gained a huge success.He was also a guest professor at Singapore National University School of Music in 2006 and 2007.His students, Chai Lin from China Central Conservatory and Chen Jiawei from Affiliated Middle school of China Central were awarded first prize in ITG solo competition in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
Mr. Dai was invited as a judge in many international competitions – Wind band competition in Thailand 2007, Jeju Island International trumpet competition in 2008, Tokyo International trumpet competition in 2010.Also as the judge at 27th International trumpet competition held in Hungary, Mr. Dai along with others fromjudge panel – principal trumpet at Vienna Philharmonic, principal trumpet at Berlin Philharmonic, principal trumpet at Paris Opera House and principal trumpet at Finland National Symphony Orchestra, gave a live solo concert for all participants.
In June 2011, Mr. Dai held a concert at National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing.The same year his solo albums – “Music and Skills”, “Rhythm and Melody” were published by China Record Co., Ltd.In Aug 2011, he was invited to Seoul International Wind Festival, his solo with Seoul wind ensemble at closing ceremony received massive applause.
Mr. Dai was invited by University of North Texas and Indiana University to teach and hold concerts in 2016, same year, as the special guest conductor, he attended Midwest clinics and conducted Palmetto Symphonic Wind Orchestra.As the special guest artist, he was invited to Spain International Trumpet Festival in 2017, also invited to give trumpet masterclass in Poland Music Academy in 2018.
