Brazilian clarinetist Darkson Magrinelli is the Professor of Clarinet at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, and 2nd/Bass Clarinetist with the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra. Dr. Magrinelli previously served as Adjunct Professor of Clarinet at East Tennessee State University and Teaching Assistant for the UNCG Clarinet Studio.
Beginning his musical studies at the age of 9, Dr. Magrinelli played professionally in orchestras in Brazil for ten years before he moved to California. In 2006 and 2007, he won the Young Soloists Competition at Orquestra SESI/FUNDARTE in Brazil, and in 2013, the APU Concerto Competition in California. As a soloist, he has performed concertos by Mozart, Weber, and Krommer with orchestras in Brazil and the United States. As a clinician, he has given masterclasses in Brazil, Ecuador, and the United States. Every Summer, Magrinelli is a teacher and performer in the International Festival of Music Guaranda which is held in Ecuador and Colombia.
Magrinelli holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He previously earned his Master of Music degree and Artist Certificate from Azusa Pacific University, and his Bachelor of Music degree from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) in Porto Alegre, Brazil. He also holds a Clarinet Diploma from the Conservatório Pablo Komlós, Brazil. In 2018, Magrinelli was initiated into Phi Kappa Phi.
During his studies at Azusa Pacific University, he was under the tutelage of clarinetist Michele Zukovsky (Los Angeles Philharmonic), who stated “This wonderful and knowledgeable musician is able to give recitals where the audience is immediately engaged and thrilled. Magrinelli is a superb clarinetist who always plays in the service of the music”. In 2014, Mr. Magrinelli toured Europe, having master classes and lessons with regarded clarinetists in Europe, such as Paolo Beltramini at the Konservatorium Dreilinden in Lucerne, Switzerland; David Minetti at the Conservatory of Toulouse, France; and Howard Golden from the Hofer Symphoniker in Germany.
His primary teachers have included Michele Zukovsky, Kelly Burke, and Diego Grendene, and he has also worked with Andy Hudson, Jennifer Showalter, Burt Hara and Yehuda Gilad. When he’s not practicing, Magrinelli enjoys live music, surfing, and traveling.
Dr. Magrinelli is a Selmer-Paris Performing Artist, and plays exclusively with Selmer Privilège clarinets.
