David D. Artley, trumpet, grew up in the small Iowa farming community of Hampton. He attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where he received his Bachelor of Music Performance degree, and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he received his Master of Music Performance. He also attended the Empire Brass seminar at Boston University's Tanglewood Institute. His mentors on trumpet include Joseph Christensen, Rolf Smedvig and Vincent Cichowicz.
While attending Northwestern he auditioned for and won a position with the Army's special touring band, The United States Army Field Band. There he performed across the country and around the world as a member of the organization's Concert Band, Brass Quintet and as Trumpet Soloist.
In 1994 he won a position with the Army's premier musical ensemble, The United States Army Band "Pershing's Own", in Washington, DC. As a member of the Army Ceremonial Band, he performed for the nation's military and civilian leadership, as well as foreign dignitaries from around the world, at the White House, the Pentagon, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in Arlington National Cemetery and other venues in our nation's capital. He performed with every instrumental component of The Army Band, including the Army Concert Band, Army Herald Trumpets, Army Brass Band, Army Blues, Army Orchestra and Army Brass Quintet. He was a founding member of The Army Trumpet Ensemble and toured with that group around the east coast and to Australia and Germany. His Army music career took him to all fifty of the United States and to ten foreign countries on four different continents.
Artley was an active freelance performer and teacher during his time in Washington. He held principal trumpet positions with The Millbrook Chamber Orchestra in Shepherdstown, WV, The Gettysburg Symphony, and the Maryland Philharmonic, in Baltimore, MD. He performed with The Arlington Symphony and other groups in the region. He was Trumpet Instructor with The Columbia Institute of Fine Arts and taught privately out of his home.
Since retiring from the Army in 2013, Artley has maintained a private studio out of his home in Monument, CO. He has coached for the Colorado Springs Youth Symphony Association and continues coaching in several local school districts. He has performed with the Chamber Orchestra of the Springs, Fort Collins Symphony, Fort Collins Opera, and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic. He is a member of the Monument Hill Brass Quintet, Colorado State University- Pueblo Faculty Brass Quintet, the Denver Municipal Band, the Denver Brass5 and is Principal Trumpet with the Denver Brass. He is currently serving as Adjunct Professor of Trumpet at Colorado State University- Pueblo.
