Dr. Heidi Radtke maintains an active career as a saxophonist and pedagogue. She is the Instructor of Saxophone at Butler University, where she also teaches courses in music history and theory and oversees the Performing Ensembles Library. She provides applied saxophone and chamber music instruction for the Carmel High School band program and is a sought-after private teacher in the Indianapolis area. Since arriving in Indianapolis in 2014, Dr. Radtke has performed with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, Carmel Symphony Orchestra, Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, at local recording studios and area churches.
An avid chamber musician, Dr. Radtke performs with fellow saxophonist Dr. Henning Schröder as part of the Hiding Duo. She also frequently collaborates with her fellow Butler University colleagues. In the spring of 2018, Dr. Radtke gave the Indiana premiere performance of Stacy Garrop's Saxophone Concerto Quicksilver with the Butler University Wind Ensemble. In November 2015, she performed alongside clarinetist Trina Gross for the Midwest premiere of Scott McAllister’s Concerto Americana, which prompted the formation of the Radtke-Gross Duo.
Dr. Radtke is on the review team for the online periodical thesaxophonist.org and has written reviews for the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors Journal. Her passion for chamber music led her to complete her doctoral dissertation on the topic of saxophone quartet pedagogy and she has given presentations on chamber music coaching strategies and resources at the Indiana Music Educators Association conference, the American Single Reed Summit, and North American Saxophone Alliance Biennial Conference.
As a solo artist, Dr. Radtke has been featured at regional and national conferences of the North American Saxophone Alliance, the Indiana State Contemporary Music Festival, College Music Society Conference, and the Annual Festival of New Music at Ball State University. She was featured at the 2015 SEAMUS Electro-Acoustic Music Conference and presented two performances at the 2015 World Saxophone Congress in Strasbourg, France.
Prior to pursuing her advanced degrees in saxophone, Dr. Radtke worked as a Music Librarian, Assistant Professor for the University of Miami, Florida Frost School of Music. She completed bachelor’s degrees in political science and saxophone performance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, master’s degrees in library science and music performance from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and a Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University Bloomington, where she also served as an Associate Instructor of Saxophone. Her primary teachers include Professor Debra Richtmeyer and Dr. Otis Murphy.
Dr. Heidi Radtke is a Vandoren Regional Artist and plays exclusively on Selmer Paris saxophones.
