Iain Hunter is the newly appointed principal trombone of the Mexico City Philharmonic. Prior to that he served as principal trombone in the Queretaro Philharmonic 2003-2005 and again 2011-2013, and the Sinaloa Symphony Orchestra of Arts based in Culiacan Sinaloa 2005-2011. Iain Hunter now teaches at the School of Music: Life and Movement OllinYolitzli in Mexico City. During his time in Sinaloa he taught at the Autonomous University of Sinaloa, in the School of Music (CEMUS) in Culiacan, and the School of Music in Mazatlan, Sinaloa. In May 2009 Iain performed the Grondahl Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra with the Orquesta Sinfónica Sinaloa de las Artes.
Iain holds degrees fromCanterburyUniversity- Bachelor of Music,Oregon State University- Bachelor of Science in Music,Indiana University- Master of Music / Performance Certificate. Iain also completed Doctoral work at The University of Georgia.
While in Indiana he was a founding member of the Canterbury Brass Quintet who in 1996, thanks to a grant from the Art's Society of New Zealand toured the South Island of New Zealand. In 1997 they won first prize in the New York Brass Quintet Competition, and 1st place in the national chamber music competition (National Fischoff Chamber Music Competition,South Bend,Indiana,USA). The Canterbury Brass Quintet recorded several CDs, with the most recent titled "Encounters".
Between 1995 and 1999 Iain Hunter was a sabbatical replacement trombone professor at theUniversityof Southern Mississippi, trombone teacher and music appreciation instructor at Southeast Louisiana University, and low brass teacher in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
His principal teachers were Warren Baker, M. Dee Stewart, Dr Philip Jameson and Fred Mills. Additional study and coaching's from: Joseph Alessi, Mark Lawrence, Peter Ellefson, Edward Kleinhammer, Karl Lenthe, Abbie Conant, Stephen Burns, Daniel Perantoni, Michael Hatfield, and Harvey Philips.
In September 2013, Mr Hunter was invited to perform as a soloist, conduct master classes and adjudicate a national solo competition at the 19th annual Brazilian Trombone Festival in Vitoria Espiritu Santo, Brazil. In December of that same year Mr. Hunter participated as a teacher and performer in the First International Festival of Brass in Merida,Yucatan and most recently, performed and conducted master classes at the First International Festival of Brass in Guanajuato, Mexico 2014.
Iain Hunter has also participated in many important international music festivals including: First International Festival of Brass Carlos Gomez, in Campinas, Brazil (2009), 34th Winter Festival De Campos Do Jordao,Tatuí, Brazil, First and Third International Festival of Trombone and Tuba (Peru Low Brass) Lima, Peru, and Hartwick College Summer Music Festival,Oneonta,New York,USA. In Mexico: Camerata of the Americas - International Cervantino Festival, 15th International Music Festival of Morelia Miguel Bernal Jiménez, International Summer Festival -Viva Vivaldi and the Summer Festival Symphony Orchestra in Mexico City, Orquesta Sinfónica de Minería.
Originally from New Zealand, Iain began his musical studies in his hometown of Christ church where he was appointed principal trombone in the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra in 1987. Before obtaining a scholarship to theUnited Stateshe made several tours of Japan, Hong Kong, China, and Australia as a soloist and member of the Christchurch Youth Brass Band. During this period he also served as a member of the New Zealand Youth Orchestra.
