Dr. Jeremy Marks teaches applied low brass and music appreciation at Tarleton State University, and similar responsibilities at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Dr. Marks earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from The University of Texas at Austin, Master of Music from Western Michigan University, and Bachelor of Music from Bowling Green State University.
Prior to his appointment at Tarleton, he held appointments at The University of Texas at Austin, Blinn College, and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. While studying at U.T., he performed in Germany, Switzerland, and France with the renown trombone choir, who received the honor of runner-up in the Emory Remington Trombone Choir competition. Dr. Marks has also served as a brass instructor at Van Alstyne I.S.D., Dripping Springs I.S.D., and James Bowie High School (Austin, TX). His students have successfully auditioned for trombone programs at institutions such as Baldwin Wallace University’s Conservatory of Music, The University of Texas at Austin, Brigham Young University, the University of North Texas, and others to name a few. Dr. Marks has presented his research interests on the bass trumpet at the Big XII Trombone conference. His document, “The Collegiate Trombonist’s Guide to the Bass Trumpet” provides the pedagogical aspects of learning the instrument and its orchestral repertoire.
Along with Dr. Marks’s academic duties, he maintains an active performing career. Recently, Dr. Marks commissioned and premiered pieces for Trombone and Wind Ensemble with the Southeastern Symphonic Winds and Austin College Symphonic Band. He serves as the 2nd Trombone of the Brazos Valley Symphony. He has also performed in several other orchestras including the Mid-Texas, Sherman, Round Rock, Southwest Michigan, and Bowling Green Symphonies. On bass trumpet and euphonium, he has performed in the Austin and Canton Symphonies as well as the Joffrey Ballet of Chicago. Dr. Marks can be heard on bass trombone with the Western Brass Quintet on the Arcadia record label and heard on other labels such as Naxos and Longhorn Music. He is a founding member of the Northside Trombone Quartet, winners of the 2013 International Trombone Association Quartet Competition, held at Columbus State University (the only American trombone quartet represented in the finals that year). NTQ has performed at several universities, conferences, and workshops including The International Trombone Festival, Big XII Trombone Conference, Low Brass Day (University of Texas – San Antonio), and The Civil Rights Summit with Presidents Obama, Clinton, Bush, and Carter in attendance. He frequently plays bass trombone with the jazz orchestras from McKinney and Frisco, and freelances in the Texoma area. Dr. Marks’s primary teachers include Dr. Nathaniel Brickens, Dr. Steve Wolfinbarger, Dr. William Mathis, and Garth Simmons.
Dr. Marks currently serves as the Web Assistant for the International Trombone Association, and holds memberships with the International Tuba and Euphonium Association, Texas Music Educators Association, the American Federation of Musicians, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. Dr. Marks proudly performs on a Bach Artisan trombone.
