Alto Saxophonist/Instructor Marc Fendel has been a staple of the Seattle music community for twenty years. His passion for performance and music education has taken him all over the world as a professional musician and bandleader. He is also a highly sought after instructor locally. Fendel earned a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music 1990-1995 where he studied with Joe Viola and George Garzone and received degrees in both Performance and Music Education.
Fendel moved to Seattle in 1995 and cofounded the Seattle Jazz group Bebop & Destruction 1994-2006. The band produced five CDs, and currently retains the longest running Jazz jam session in Seattle at over twenty years. In 2003 Fendel founded Seattle group Swampdweller which is a cross genre party band designed to get people on the dance floor. Swampdweller has three titles to their catalog and continues to mesmerize audiences each year at regional festivals and clubs.
As an educator Fendel taught Jazz Studies, ensembles, and private lessons at the Seattle Drum School of Music for twelve years. In 2007 he opened and managed the Seattle Drum School Georgetown Branch until 2012. Following his tenure there, as a result of a successful Kickstarter campaign for a camera, Fendel produced over 600 music lessons for his YouTube channel Music Education For All. After years of living in Seattle Fendel also enjoys backpacking, skiing, and long distance hiking. In the summer of 2012 Fendel walked 2660 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail stretching from Mexico to Canada. He composed dozens of songs, and developed a line drawing style taken from his photography. Summer 2015 Fendel hiked 1,200 miles on the the The Pacific Northwest Trail from Glacier National Park to Olympic National Park on the Pacific Ocean. For more check out: TheTrailProvides.com
Fendel has performed with many artists including Reggie Watts, Diana Krall, Foday Musa Suso, Bernie Worrell, Billy Higgins, Clark Terry, and John Wicks. He teaches privately in the Seattle area and online. Fendel is currently performing with The Vexations, Klahane Saxophone Quartet, and Swampdweller.
