Born in Irun, Northern Spain, he began his musical studies at eight years old with Mr. Diego Alonso Rodriguez, Bassist with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, BSO. He began his studies of trombone and tuba in France with Mr. Andre Lassus finishing his Superior Studies with the gold medal. With a grant from the French government, he continued his studies in Paris at the CSM under the direction of J. Fourquet (Trombone) and Roger Pouzet, (conducting)
At the age of ten, he joined the Band of Irun, a year later joining the Band of Hondarribia. When he was thirteen, he joined the Band of San Sebastian. He was First Trombone soloist or Euphoniumist in all of these bands.
At sixteen years old, he won a place in the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, BSO. He has also collaborated with other orchestra including the Basque National Symphony Orchestra, the Saint Cecilia orchestra of Pamplona, Bordeaux- Aquitaine Symphony and the National Symphony Orchestra (Washington) conducted by Mistlav Rostropovich, and many chamber groups.
Within the BSO he is also a soloist of other instruments, specializing in the bass trumpet, playing works of Wagner, Stravinsky and Ligetti.
With the Brass group of the BSO, he participated in a concert under the direction of Eric Therwiliger, solo horn with the Berlin Philharmonic.
He is a founder member of the brass quintet of the BSO, now called the Euskalduna Brass Ensemble and founding member of the BSO trombone quartet “Tromboi Laukotea”. With these groups and others, he has participated in many concerts in the BSO Chamber music Series.
As a soloist, he has participated in several Chamber Music Seasons of the BSO and particularly of note, was his interpretation, in the 2004/05 season, of the Concertino by Lars Eric Larsson, at the invitation of the principal conductor Juan Jose Mena.
With Wind Band, he has also played several works as soloist, including Bolivar by Erick Cook, the Larrson Concertino, the Concerto by Rimsky-Korsakov, Trombone Spagnolo by S. de Palma and Morceau Symphonique by Guillmant. He also performed the first performance of Salve Maria, for band, organ and trombone by the composer Bartolome de Ercilla, who is from Durango in the Basque Country.
As a conductor, he started when he was twelve with The Irun Youth Band. At sixteen, he toured Germany, conducted the youth orchestra of the Bayonne-Basque Coast Conservatory and was invited to conduct the Band of Hondarribia. He was bandmaster of the Band of Durango until December 2011. He has also occasionally conducted the bands of Areatza(Villaro), Laudio-LLodio and of Castro Urdiales. During 2015 he has been invited on various occasions to conduct the Town Band of Irun.
He has also participated in various recordings with the Band of the City of Bilbao, including the centenary CD´s. Since joining the BSO, he has participated in all of their recordings. These include recordings, distributed internationally by Naxos, and are dedicated to a wide variety of Basque composers. Additionally he took part in Gontzal Mendibil´s recording Iparagirre Egalaria.
As a teacher, he was professor of trombone at the Juan Crisostomo de Arriaga Superior Conservatory in Bilbao from 1997 until 2012.He has taken part in various courses there including the Study of the Orchestral Works of Gustav Mahler, imparted by the tubist Roger Bobo.
He has himself given conferences about the trombone at Deusto University, the UNED (University of Distance Education) and at the week-long Culture Festival “Mazzantini” in Llodio.
In 2014 he collaborated with Michel Bequet in a course in Bilbao and, in the same year, was invited by the Spanish Brass Festival to give a masterclass in Alzira, Valencia.
