Freelance Musician
Dr.Steve Carmichael is a versatile saxophonist residing in Mclean, Virginia. Feeling at home in multiple music scenarios, Steve performs at ease in the classical, jazz, and commercial musical idioms. Serving for 20 years as a saxophone and flute instrumentalist with the US Navy Music Program, he has performed for audiences in over 40 countries. In demand as a soloist and chamber musician, he has performed throughout the United States, France, Italy, China, Russia, Australia, Germany, United Kingdom, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, Scotland and Morocco.
He has served on the faculties of Carthage College, Kenosha, Wisconsin and the University of Wisconsin – Rock County. Currently he is a freelance artist in the greater Washington DC area where he is in great demand as a performer and clinician in public schools and university settings.
As a supporter of new music, he has had over 18 new works written for him. He has also composed and recorded his own new music compositions.
Steve has performed at the Monterrey Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Yokohama Jazz Festival, US Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium, and North American Saxophone Alliance regional and national conferences. He has performed with the San Diego Symphony, Chattanooga Symphony, NHK Tokyo Symphony, Chicago’s Northshore Concert Band, Nelson Riddle Orchestra, The San Diego Wind Ensemble, and the Fairfax Wind Symphony.
